CryptoLocker is Trojan horse malware which surfaced in late 2013. A form of ransomware targeting computers running Windows, a CryptoLocker attack may come from various sources; one such is disguised as a legitimate email attachment. When activated, the malware encrypts certain types of files stored on local and mounted network drives, with the private key stored only on the malware's control servers. The malware then displays a message which offers to decrypt the data if a payment (through either Bitcoin or a pre-paid voucher) is made by a stated deadline, and says that the private key will be deleted and unavailable for recovery if the deadline passes. If the deadline is not met, the malware offers to decrypt data via an online service provided by the malware's operators, for a significantly higher price in Bitcoin.

Currently, there is no way to retrieve your files if you are infected. Ensure you have a proper backup. Some IT Professionals at FoolishIT.com have come up with CryptoPrevent, which can be downloaded by clicking here.

Install CryptoPrevent, after it opens up click Apply. It will then apply some policies to help prevent your PC from being infected. Reboot your PC, and you should be set.

Neighborhood Nerd is not affiliated with FoolishIT.com and cannot verify the application. However, it is widely distributed on many IT forums.

    Free Anti-Virus Software

Tired of paying Symantec, McAfee, Kaspersky and other companies a yearly subscription fee?

There are alternative applications available that provide similar protection and are free. Take a look at any of the following virus protection software:

    AVG Free Edition
    Avast Free Edition

Note: Not all virus protection is created equally. Installing an antivirus program does not always remove high-tech viruses.
